An annual MOT fundamentally consists of an inspection and testing of your vehicle – tyres, brakes, exhaust, suspension, lights, and checking of the engine emissions to ensure your vehicle (and all it’s sub-components) meets the prescribed regulations for safety, performance & efficiency.

If your vehicle has been serviced regularly (within the prescribed manufacturers parameters if you wish to retain/maintain the validity of the OEM warranty) and consumables that wear out (e.g. tyres, brakes, etc.) replaced as necessary then the inspection should be not much more than a formality at a minimum cost, but still necessary for safety and emissions purposes.

Additionally, a well serviced/maintained vehicle can actually save you money in the long run as it’s efficiency will be optimised resulting in reduced fuel consumption to deliver the same output, plus it’s expected longevity will be extended.

However, if it hasn’t then replacement components/repairs and/or extra maintenance may be required to get it back to operating at optimal performance & efficiency, unfortunately at an additional cost to just the MOT.
